The whole house, or the one room that has been bothering you
Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets. Interior painting for homes in Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville and Oak Ridge.
Two things separate a repaint you stop noticing from one you keep noticing. The first is the edges — where the wall meets the ceiling, the trim, the door casing. The second is whether the color was right for that particular room in the first place. Most painting companies are decent at the first and have no opinion at all on the second.
ABK Interior is run by Koby Hyde, a Knoxville native who has painted more than 75 murals freehand. A mural is a cut-in with no tape and no second chance, which is a harder version of the same skill your ceiling line needs. And because the day job is working in color, you get an actual recommendation instead of a fan deck handed across the kitchen counter.
Prep is most of the job
Before any paint
- Furniture moved to the center or out, floors covered
- Trim, outlets and fixtures masked
- Nail holes, dents and hairline cracks filled, then sanded flush
- Walls wiped down — paint does not stick to dust or kitchen grease
- Spot primer over patches and stains so they do not flash through
The paint itself
- Cut-ins done by hand at ceiling, trim and corners
- Rolled in full passes so there is no lap sheen down the wall
- Two coats as standard, more only where a color change genuinely needs it
- Sheen chosen per room, not one sheen for the whole house
Before we leave
- Walked room by room in daylight, with you
- Touch-ups done then and there, not on a return visit
- Masking pulled, floors uncovered, furniture back
- Leftover paint labeled by room and left with you
The color gets decided in your room, not in the store.
A north-facing living room takes cool light all day, so a warm neutral straight off the fan deck reads grey once it is on the wall. Going two steps warmer than the swatch gets you the color you actually asked for. Koby walks the room at the time of day you use it and specs the palette, and that comes with the quote.
From photo to finished
-
Send a photo of the room
From your phone is fine. It is the fastest way to tell whether this is a fit before anybody drives anywhere.
-
Koby walks it and specs the color
He looks at the light, the floors, and what the room is used for, then recommends specific colors and sheens. Included, not billed separately.
-
You get a written quote
Rooms listed, colors named, prep spelled out. Nothing that moves once the drop cloths are down.
-
The work gets done and Koby signs it off
Carried out by painters he has vetted himself, scoped and color-matched by him, and walked by him before it is called finished.
What people ask before booking
How much does it cost to paint a room in Knoxville?
It depends on four things, and any painter who quotes you over the phone without knowing them is guessing: the wall area (not the floor area), whether ceilings and trim are included, how much prep the walls need, and whether you are making a big color change that needs extra coverage. A bedroom with sound walls and a similar color is a different job from a living room with a dark-to-light change and cracked plaster. Send a photo and you get a written number for your actual room rather than a range.
Do you move furniture and cover the floors?
Yes, both, and it is included. Furniture goes to the center of the room or out of it, floors get covered, and trim and fixtures get masked before any paint is opened. Everything goes back where it was before we leave. If there is anything heavy, fragile or genuinely irreplaceable, tell us up front and we will plan around it rather than move it.
What is the difference between one coat and two coats?
Coverage and durability. One coat over an existing similar color can look acceptable on the day and then show patchiness in raking evening light, especially on flat sheens. Two coats give you even color and a film that survives being wiped down. Two coats is standard here. Beyond two is worth it only in specific cases, like going light over a saturated dark color, and we will tell you when that applies instead of adding coats to the invoice.
Can you paint just one room?
Yes. A single room is a normal job, not a favor. It is also a sensible way to see how the work holds up before handing over a whole house, and a lot of full-house repaints here started as one bedroom.
